The Evolution of Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) at CODA Brothers Interpreting
In the wake of the 2020 pandemic, the landscape for American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters and Deaf Professionals has shifted dramatically. Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) has emerged as a new communication development , providing access for Deaf individuals navigating the new normal of remote work and hybrid schedules. Launching our venture in 2010, we were met with unexpected resistance from Deaf Professionals who seemed hesitant to embrace VRI. The journey of understanding unfolded as we delved into the dynamics of the interpreter-Deaf Professional relationship, realizing that the reluctance stemmed from a preference for in-person interpreting. Despite the uphill battle, we respected their right to choose their preferred mode of communication.

Many cited reasons such as VRI technological inconsistency, preference for in-person interactions, or misunderstanding VRI as the solution for making phone calls. As we explored the root cause, we uncovered a significant player in the video interpreting realm and telecommunication arena: Video Relay Service (VRS).
VRS, a crucial tool for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, facilitates telephone communication through ASL interpreters via video. Governed by FCC regulations, VRS operates under specific constraints, including a queue system for interpreters, designated video platforms, and restrictions on in-room usage. The realization dawned upon us that VRS companies, in promoting VRI services to Deaf Professionals, imposed similar constraints as in their VRS offerings.
Drawing on this insight, CODA Brothers Interpreting crafted a unique 'anti-VRS' model for VRI. Unlike the queue system prevalent in VRS, our VRI eschews the next available interpreter, focusing instead on building consistency through small pools of nationally certified interpreters that build relationships with the Deaf professional. We remain platform-agnostic, accommodating various video platforms to meet the diverse preferences of Deaf Professionals. Our commitment extends beyond certification – we ensure our interpreters possess the 'it' factor that places the Deaf Professional's needs at the forefront thus having the ability to clearly and coherently voice-interpret the Deaf professionals exact thought and word choice they make.
